Temple University Japan System

CUSTOMER PROFILE:
Temple University Japan (TUJ), founded in 1982, is the oldest and largest American university in Japan. TUJ offers an extensive range of educational programs – undergraduate program; graduate programs in law, business, and education; an intensive English-language program; continuing education courses; and a corporate education division.

CHALLENGE:

Temple University Japan (TUJ) maintained information about students, courses, applications and instructors in different systems and databases, resulting in a great level of data duplication. They wanted a centralized Web-based system to improve the management of their data.

The proposed system would comprise a Student section that would allow TUJ students to register, browse courses, view course details, apply for courses and view their course list online. The system would also include an Admin section to manage courses, students and applications. The biggest challenge was to maintain the flow of the existing MS Access System and build on it to include additional functionality requirements.

RESPONSE:

It was decided to build the TUJ Web-based system in phases to ensure smooth transition. Phase I included Web-based development of the Continuing Education (ContEd) program only.

The students can register for ContEd courses online while the TUJ Admin can easily manage ContEd courses and assign them to a semester. The TUJ admin can also specify which courses should be displayed in the Student section, and manage online and offline student applications.

The Reports section allows the TUJ admin to generate different kinds of report (for example: Enrollment and Tuition data) and print ID Cards and Labels.
